Acquaviva, PhD MSW CSE FNAP provides hospice and palliative care professionals with the knowledge and tools they need to better serve their LGBTQIA+ patients and ensure that they receive compassionate, affirming care. She will describe the successes and remaining challenges related to LGBTQIA+ rights in the United States, with a focus on recent laws that hinder the rights of transgender individuals and the implications of the overturning of Roe vs. Wade for LGBTQIA+ individuals. Additionally, participants will gain an understanding of their ethical obligations as healthcare providers to engage in advocacy efforts to promote equitable access to healthcare for all patients. Learning Objectives: 1. Understand recent laws that hinder the rights of transgender individuals in the United States and the implications of these laws for the transgender community's access to healthcare and other critical services. 2. Discuss the implications of the overturning of Roe vs. Wade for LGBTQIA+ individuals. 3. Explore the ethical obligations of physicians, nurses, social workers, and chaplains to engage in advocacy efforts to oppose and overturn laws that impede their ability to provide high-quality, evidence-based care to LGBTQIA+ patients.
